In 1985, twenty-five women from the Mid-Cities area, disturbed by domestic violence in Northeast Tarrant County, founded Mid-Cities Supporters of the Shelter, a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization in support of The Women’s Shelter in Arlington.
In February of 2006, The Women’s Shelter and Women’s Haven of Fort Worth merged to become SafeHaven of Tarrant County, and the organization’s name was changed to Mid-Cities Supporters of SafeHaven.
SOS members support SafeHaven financially through fundraisers, donations of clothing and personal items for their clients and items for Berry Good Buys, a resale store in Fort Worth. SOS volunteers are vital to Berry Good Buys, assisting staff by sorting and preparing items for display.
Financial support of SafeHaven of Tarrant County is the number one priority of Mid-Cities Supporters of SafeHaven. The most popular fundraiser, Celebrity Chefs, is an exciting event held for 17 years that accounted for a large portion of the $3.4 million dollars given to SafeHaven since 1986.
The energy and participation of SOS members, coupled with the support of the community ensures that SafeHaven will continue to save lives of women and children living in abusive relationships.
