The 24th Annual Mid-Cities SOS Tennis Benefit was challenged by the weather, but still managed to bring out 200 women to play during the 3-day event at the Southlake Tennis Center. We were able to get in two complete days in the first week, with the rain holding off until the last minute on Tuesday. The Wednesday event was postponed a week due to weather and resulted in having the best weather of the week. Players enjoyed a delicious breakfast from Central Market while bidding on the wonderful baskets from SOS members, who graciously donated over 50 baskets for the week.
We were delighted to be joined by Valerie Salter, Barb Reece and Katherine Jacobs, the new CEO of SafeHaven, who each spoke at lunch about the wonderful work being done by SafeHaven. Representatives from SOS manned a SOS/SafeHaven table during the event. The SafeHaven van parked out front was filled with donations from the players and volunteers.
Our thanks to Central Market, Colleyville Lions Club, The Halbert Group, Smurfit Kappa, Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital HEB, The Southlake Tennis Center and the City of Southlake for their generous donations which made it possible for 100% of the players’ entry fees to be donated to SafeHaven. The women’s event raised at least $10,000 which will be used to sponsor Play Therapy for the children at the shelters. Go here to view more tournament photos.
Many thanks to our fantastic tennis committee which included Patty Shaw, Tara Hutchins-Welsh, Gay Johnson, Martha Ragsdale, Alma Barry, Kathleen Steinsberger, Lisa Halbert, Jane Wood, Anna Saunders, Patti Campbell, Linda Timmons, Sally Wobbeking, Jill Kralicke, Martha Blue, Melissa Moss, Shannon Cassady, Debbie Farrar, and Martha Matthews. Without their help, this event would not have been possible.
The Mixed Doubles event, which was rained out in May, has been rescheduled for Saturday, June 13. Play will begin at 5:00 pm and last until 8:00. Bar-B-Que from The Feedstore, home brewed beer or other beverages will be served after the players come off the courts. A wonderful silent auction will be ongoing throughout the evening. We have fabulous items including a $1500 pair of diamond earrings from Richard’s Jewelers, a $1500 cooking class/dinner for 16 from Tastefully Yours Catering, gift cards from area restaurants and Texas Ranger tickets with reserved parking. All SOS members and their guests are welcome to attend the dinner portion of the event as well as participate in the silent auction for a $25.00 donation. Please RSVP to either the Southlake Tennis Center (817-421-5605) or to Elaine Terry (817-991-0162) if you would like to come out and watch some good tennis, share some good food and fellowship and help raise money for SafeHaven.
We look forward to seeing you there!
